Comic rental stores are popular in the 90’s with the blooming of the Hong Kong and Japan comic series being introduced into Malaysia. These comics, especially comics from Hong Kong which their themes mostly focus on characters who master different Kung-Fu tactics, defeating their enemies in their journey of adventures.
These comics are usually serialize published in Hong Kong comic magazines. They renew their chapters every week which stimulates the reader’s interest to read the following chapters.

“Some of them even transform their shop into a combination of café and rental shops, however it didn’t work.” Tan described the situation of comic shops in Malaysia.
Tan Choon Peok said that the most important factor for the comic shops to survive should be attracting new customer, but many of them have failed in that area.
“However, developing younger readers is also a problem as children nowadays seldom go out on their own, so if their parents are busy, they just can’t visit our shop.”

Tan Choon Peok added with a hint of nostalgia.
“This shop have been accompanying me since I’m young. To me, this is not just a shop anymore but a partner of my life. I will operate this shop until I cannot support.”
