Tan Choon Peok explained about the difficulties of operating a comic rental shop nowadays.

“My shop might become North Malaysia’s only comic rental store left,” Global Comic Store owner Tan Choon Peok said.

Comic rental store was once a common sight, found in every residential area. There was at least one in every housing estate. However, have you noticed that these shops have vanished?

Global Comic Store is located in a residential area in Gelugor and is said to be the only comic rental store left following the rapid development of comic rental stores 20 years ago.

The shop houses 60 book shelves which are filled with around 50,000 books including Hong Kong and Japan comics, romance and martial arts novels. These books occupy a total of the 58 book shelves of the shop. This shows the popularity of these books at the store.

“However, nowadays people seldom go to our shops to read these books.”

To overcome this trend, Tan Choon Peok had overseen a new developed comic category in Malaysia which helps him to stabilize the number of customers and even open up a new way to approach younger readers- educational comic.

Educational comics which gain popularity among students have saved the shop from closing up.
